Experience
Festival Staff and Drum tech - ayclive festival
20th - 26 July 2025
Over the summer I had an amazing oppertunity to gain experience in the live production world by working for Ayclive Festival as a member of staff and stagehand.
My role was to oversee the safety of festival goers whilst acts were playing over the weekend, answer any questions someone may have had and handling crowd control, working closely alongside the security team. Over the four days of setup, I worked closely alongside the production team in helping get everything set up, anything from checking patch lines on stage to ereting the stages roof and line array system. My primary role stage side during the performances to was maintain a close eye on all the equipment on stage and communicate with FOH if a problem occured. I was incharge of loading amps, cabs and the drum kit on and off stage during change over, line checking any festival hired backline and ensuring all musicians had what they needed to perform which required clear communication and understanding even with lack on knowledge.

Recording Engineer and Producer
I’ve immersed myself in the world of recording and producing by working on writing and recording of my bands debut EP ‘You Only Have To Ask’. This process spanned across a 4 month time period, which meant long hours in the studio and mental resiliance to stay creative and concentrated. Some sessions being over 10 hours long.
My main role was Recording Engineer, helping track multiple guitar layers, bass, vocals, synths and FX. From creating echo chambers, dealing with phase and troubleshooting technical issues, really tested my ability to think on my feet and do whatever I could to solve a problem. This was especially evident when I engineering a four piece folk band when I had no independant studio experience or recording a band! But with my ability to people manage, think logically and maintain a relaxed demenour. The product turned out amazing which the client was happy with. This gave me the confidence to gain more clientel, since then I’ve had a hand in projects with the band ‘Brude’ and recording voice lines for an animated film.

Studio and Live Drummer
As a drummer for nearly a decade. I’ve had the oppertunity to get involved with the local scene both live and in studio.
The first band I was involved in was an indie rock group called The Blue Hummingbirds, of which I played live with for about two years, I debuted with the band by headlining BlackStock festival in 2021 to more than 1000+ people. I then briefly got involved with the bands studio life by featuring on a single called ‘One Time Thing’.
Throughout the years following that I then got to work with more and more artists and later co-found ‘Fletcher’ of which I am still active in today. I gained all of my studio experience working on our upcoming EP ‘You Only Have To Ask’. On which I engineered all aspects apart from drums, which I performed. This certainly shows my ability to work to a deadline and under pressure, but also means I am competant to recording and playing live with a click track.

Project Portfolio
My main role in this project was Recording Engineer for all main elements apart from drums, in which I performed. My job was to ensure clean and quality recordings, keep the clients energy levels high in order to perform at his maximum potencial, comping and deciding on takes in collaboration with the client and making effecitve musical and technical decisions.
The recording took place across various studios within the Middlesbrough College campus, smaller rooms being used for Guitars and Vocals, to ensure clean and transparent takes. To Studio one for drums and bass for a larger than life sound. Working on different platforms, from a Digidesign C24 to an Avid S6.
To reflect on the outcome, I would say both the client and I are very proud of the outcome from a technical and emotional standpoint, the client was able to effectivley convey his message in the material whilst also maximising audio quality and production standards.
2021 - 2025
After finishing secondary school, I went to further education as Bishop Auckland college to study Music and Music performance, finishing top of my class every year.
This is where I gained the bulk of my studio and live music experience before branching out with bands and external projects. Recording peices for assignments, and applying that knowledge when I had the oppertunity to host a recording session with established drummer Paul Evans of Warfare which was a drum recording done in the college home studio, developing my technical skills with ProTools, studio management and client morale, I later got asked by Paul to record drums on two seperate projects without him present. Which showed a development of trust between me and the client, which is a crucial trait to have if I want to progress into the production and performance world.
I graduated in October of 2025 with a Level 5 HND graded a merit.
Education
2025-2026
Moving on from Bishop Auckland, I began my journey to a Bachelors Degree in Audio and Music Production at Middlesbrough College.
Continuing to develop my skills and knowledge from Bishop Auckland, I got heveily involved with students in the studio and exploring the local scene. This is also where I met Jacob and started production on his EP, which is trusted me enough to engineer. Throughout this course I’ve refined my recording skills and knowledge by applying recording techinques in various mediums in the industry, for instance recording for TV and Film, overdubbing, ADR, Musical composition to video and Foley/SFX.
I am set to graduate in summer of 2026 with a Bachelors Degree with Honors.
2026
While studying at Middlesbrough, I am working towards achieving my official Avid Certification which in my opinion is the biggest step in my personal development.
An Avid Certification gives an automatic level of trust towards clients and employers, essentially skipping a step in the hiring process with not having to immediately proving your competance with Avid software. It proves more than just recording, it showcases your ability to meet deadlines, organisiation, workflow and efficiency which is essencial for all potencial employers and with the ceritficate being pinned on the end of all emails is a good impression from stage one.
I hope to achieve this in August of this year
Industry Engagement
Ken Scott
I recently had the amazing oppertunity to meet the man behind so many iconic records, most notably The Beatles and David Bowie, Mr Ken Scott!
I always strive to be in the same room of like minded people because it creates networking oppertunites that alway prove helpful in the future.
Ken gave amazing advice for us young enginners and at seminars like these, you often get to meet and have one on one conversations with the speaker. So I had the chance to pick his brain on some more personally struggles I come across in this industry and he never failed to impress.
“I always ask people, do you have a plan B? If so, I tell them to leave because you need to put your all into this line of work, otherwise nothing will ever come of it” - Ken Scott 2026
In March of 2025 I attended a clinic featuring Zack Graybeal aka ‘Zack Grooves hosted by Drum Shop UK.
Zack is one of the leading Jazz fusion drummers in the modern world. In a band called ‘Everything Yes’, he treated us to an amazing display of musicianship, skill and mentored us of the realities of a working musician. I picked his brain on self image to his daily life and his work life balance.
This was an amazing oppertunity as I managed to connect with loads of local drummers and a videographer called Mathias Newberry, who helped me with filming content for my portfolio.
“Drummers are like atheletes, you need to do as much non-drummer training as you do drumming related exercise, you’ll be amazed how much general fitness impacts your performance” - Zack Greybeal 2025

A.I in music
With the rise of Artifical Intelligence in the world, it is certainly going to effect how us creatives operate. Major streaming services are already getting bombarded with A.I. generated ‘artists’ with hundreds of thousands streams and dangerously realistic cover art and material, but you can still hear the inauthentic and forged sound (granted I have a trained ear) but even family members and friends notice the production difference.
With this in mind, this is why I strive to keep my own work and clients work as authentic as possible, searching for the parts in performance that you couldn’t perform again, which I think is what makes art, searching for the imperfections that seemingly fit perfectly with the material, a unique vocal run to an accidental pinch harmonic in a massive guitar solo.
Something that A.I cannot replicate! And I strongly encourage everyone to follow along with this!
Bedroom Recording vs Studio recording
With Audio Interfaces getting smaller and smaller, and with computers becoming extremely powerful. I am not at all suprised that many artists are taking to home studios for recording. I personally am all for it because everyone can relate to having an idea at 3am and not having anything better than beat boxing it into your phones voice notes that you’ll never look at again! (Guilty for this)
However there is something about the vibe of a real studio, surrounded by loads of outboard gear and more instruments than you can shake a stick at. Some real creative gems can be made in a room as spectacular as a real studio. It gives us engineers an oppertunity to meet and work with such amazing talent and perhaps shed a new light on your music you once never say possible! We are the next step into taking your music to the next level. They are understandably expensive, but you certainly will get your moneys worth hiring dedicated musicians and engineers like myself who are passionate in the process and fine details. It is amazing for networking as well. You never know who you will meet and a breakthrough for you could be a studio booking away.
